[ARCHIVED] Fireworks Permits Going on Sale through July 3

Beginning, Friday, June 14, permits can be purchased for $20 (cash only) at the City’s Fire Administration Office, 108 E Broadway St, between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. Between Monday, July 1 and Wednesday, July 3, office hours will be extended to 6:00 pm. No permits will be sold on Thursday, July 4.

Since Independence Day falls on a Thursday this year, Sand Springs fireworks permits will be valid for the discharge of Class 1.4G common fireworks at individual residences from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm on Wednesday, July 3, from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm on Thursday, July 4, and from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm on Friday, July 5.

A flyer with fireworks safety tips is provided with each permit.

“Many citizens choose to celebrate our country’s independence with their own flair. Fireworks are not toys, however, and they can cause serious injuries, fires and property damage if used inattentively or carelessly,” said Sand Springs Fire Marshal Stan Smith. “The permit process seeks to educate people in responsible use of common fireworks and provides a means to address illegal or irresponsible activities that may lead to tragedy.”

Fees collected from permits offset overtime costs by police and fire officials to assure fireworks are being discharged responsibly with a valid permit. Police officers and fire officials will be patrolling neighborhoods throughout the holiday checking for permits and watching for abuses. They will also be checking to assure residents don’t leave any fireworks messes behind.

City fireworks permits must be purchased by an adult age 18 or older who serves as the responsible party for activities at an individual residence. Permits are non-transferrable. Residential streets can be used as a fireworks discharge area provided residents do not hinder traffic and clean up any debris.

Youths under age 18 must be supervised when discharging fireworks and parents can be held responsible for unsupervised incidents.

The pre-set court fine, including costs, for illegally discharging fireworks in the city limits is $154.00. However, a maximum fine of $544.00 can be imposed for serious or repetitive violations.
