In 2007, Downtown America conducted a study on how to revitalize downtown Sand Springs. They came up with the idea of hosting an event in the fall that would complement the Annual Herbal Affair & Festival in the spring. A soap box derby race was suggested and approved. The first race in 2008 drew 131 cars and has steadily grown each year. After sponsoring the event for the last five years, the Sand Springs Civitan Club asked the City of Sand Springs to begin organizing the race in 2013.
The race is divided into two categories – novelty and competitive. There is an adult and youth category in each. Entry fees are $40 per adult and $25 per youth. Youth are considered 9th grade and under. The event is free for spectators.
We are currently looking for sponsors to help defray the expenses of putting on this type of event as well as accepting applications for vendors and racers. All applications can be found on our website at www.sandspringsok.org/derby.
All proceeds will benefit Sand Springs Park Friends, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization designed to transform your philanthropic support into quality of life improvement projects within our community.
